When we had the last petrol crisis I couldn't help thinking to myself that it is right that we should pay a fortune for petrol. With global warming in mind, I thought it was about time that we all found a different way to travel that would reduce our impact and that if we didn't we should pay a bit more for the convenience of a car!

Having a car has certainly been weighing heavily on my conscience for a number of years.

For a while I was an armchair activist, and whilst acknowledging the difference I could make, I didn't do much about it. But lately I've started to take some more action. When I last bought a car I went down in engine size from a 1.8 to a 1.2 with the environment in mind. I have also started to walk more places, or catch a bus or train instead of driving. I'm getting as much out of one trip as possible and I'm even thinking of pledging to walk to work and back one day a week instead of using the car. And the good news is, that this will not only reduce my impact on the planet, it will also help me get fit and might even save me some money!

And now I've said it out loud on the Internet, I'm going to feel that I have to stick to it... I'm accountable suddenly. And so I should be. Like Al Gore said in his Inconvenient Truth - how could I explain to my children and their children, that I knew what action had to be taken but failed to take it.

We all have to act now! Even if it's one step at a time. Together we can make a difference.
